Head Start/Early Head Start Policy Council

The Head Start/Early Head Start Policy Council is made up of parents of children enrolled in the program and representatives of the community.  The regular meetings are the 4th Tuesday evening of each month.

WHY IS THERE A POLICY COUNCIL?

Head Start Performance Standards require that every Head Start Program have a Policy Council.  In order for a Head Start program to continue to receive Federal funding there must be an active Policy Council.

WHAT DOES THE POLICY COUNCIL DO?

The Head Start Policy Council works in collaboration with the ESC Board of Directors to govern the Head Start program through what is called Shared Governance.  At Policy Council meetings representatives review, share input, and vote on matters such as:

  • Personnel Reports
  • Financial Reports
  • Changes in policies
  • Grant applications

Head Start Policy Council Members are provided continuous on-going training to best equip them with the tools to be a successful members.  Local program updates as well as national legislative updates are provided during monthly meetings.

Parent representatives are elected by the Parent Group at each Head Start/Early Head Start site.
